One day, Mrs. Primm and Lyle are shopping, when Lyle--through no real fault of his own--ends up infuriating department-store bigwig Mr. Grumps who turns red and blue and purple with rage. This unfortunate eruption lands the rollicking reptile in the Central Park zoo where Lyle fights back his crocodile tears. In an elaborate sequence of events, Lyle finds himself back with the Primms on East 88th Street, a neighborhood hero, and, startlingly, even a friend of the mistrustful cat Loretta. Bernard Waber--creator of The House on East 88th Street--charms young readers again with this endearing, whimsical 1965 classic, perfectly complemented by his simple, sketchy, comical illustrations.

All their minuscule home furnishings, from postage stamp paintings to champagne cork chairs, are “borrowed” from the “human beans” who tromp around loudly above them. All is well until Pod is spotted upstairs by a human boy! Can the Clocks stay nested safely in their beloved hidden home, or will they be forced to flee? The British author Mary Norton won the Carnegie Medal for The Borrowers in 1952, the year it was first published in England. This repackaged paperback edition still has the delightful original black-and-white illustrations by Beth and Joe Krush inside. A charmer!

About Summer Reading

Dear Lower School Families,

Although Hamlin Lower School does not require students to read particular books over the summer, it is our hope that you will continue to promote reading on a regular basis. Our goal is to nurture a life-long love of reading, and we hope that you will promote reading on a regular basis during the summer months.

The books listed offer a sampling of the best and most popular titles across an array of genres and reading levels.  While the list is intended as a guide to your child's reading, it is merely a fraction of the choices available to you. San Francisco and the bay area is rich in places to find good books. We encourage you to visit the San Francisco Public Library and many local branches. Anyone living, working or attending school in San Francisco is eligible for a library card, and we encourage all of you to get one for both you and your daughter.

We hope that you will set aside time at least twenty minutes each day to share a book with your daughter. There is no better support for your daughters' academic success than reading aloud to her every day. Listening to outstanding children's literature enlarges vocabulary, expands general knowledge, enriches understanding of literary references, and shows how much you care about reading and learning.  Picture books are not only meant for younger children; older children can benefit from the richness of illustrations and story lines.

We hope you find these summer book recommendations a good starting point for summer reading.  Have a wonderful and restful summer vacation!

Keep reading and imagining,

Ms. Cardone, Librarian

The Bad Beginning - Lemony Snicket; Brett Helquist (Illustrator)
    ISBN: 0060283122
    Publication Date: 1999-09-30
Make no mistake. The Bad Beginning begins badly for the three Baudelaire children, and then gets worse. Their misfortunes begin one gray day on Briny Beach when Mr. Poe tells them that their parents perished in a fire that destroyed their whole house. "It is useless for me to describe to you how terrible Violet, Klaus, and even Sunny felt in the time that followed," laments the personable (occasionally pedantic) narrator, who tells the story as if his readers are gathered around an armchair on pillows. But of course what follows is dreadful. The children thought it was bad when the well-meaning Poes bought them grotesque-colored clothing that itched. But when they are ushered to the dilapidated doorstep of the miserable, thin, unshaven, shiny-eyed, money-grubbing Count Olaf, they know that they--and their family fortune--are in real trouble. Still, they could never have anticipated how much trouble. While it's true that the events that unfold in Lemony Snicket's novels are bleak, and things never turn out as you'd hope, these delightful, funny, linguistically playful books are reminiscent of Roald Dahl (remember James and the Giant Peach and his horrid spinster aunts), Charles Dickens (the orphaned Pip in Great Expectations without the mysterious benefactor), and Edward Gorey (The Gashlycrumb Tinies). There is no question that young readers will want to read the continuing unlucky adventures of the Baudelaire children in The Reptile Room and The Wide Window.

Summer Reading San Francisco Public Library

Summer Read Aloud Books for the Family

Reading aloud to children has been linked to young children’s emergent literacy ability, which can be defined as the skills or knowledge that children develop before learning the more conventional skills of reading and writing which affect children’s later success in reading. Even after your child can read on their own, reading aloud is still a great way to bond with your child and can help foster their curiosity, creativity and imagination. I have created a variety of “read aloud” lists for various ages and interests.

The Bathing Costume - Olivier Tallec (Illustrator); Charlotte Moundlic
      ISBN: 9781592701414
      Publication Date: 2013-05-28
Eight-year-old Myron is sent to spend a week in the country with his grandparents while his parents prepare for a move. This is his first vacation without his mother. He is dreading the separation and is a little afraid of his Grandpa and his bigger, stronger cousins. To make matters worse, this is the summer he is expected to fulfill the family tradition of jumping off the 10-foot diving board. Myron is sure he's not ready, especially since he's using his older brother's swimsuit, which is too big and certain to come off when he jumps. His evolution from timid Mama's boy to a more confident and independent kid feels genuine. By the end of the week, Myron has gained the respect of his cousins, overcome his fear of his grandfather, jumped off the high dive, and, most importantly, forgotten about missing his mother. Though the text is somewhat lengthy, the translation is smooth and the narrative is broken down into daily vignettes that can be read as short chapters. Expressive illustrations have a sunny summer feel and are full of humor and appealing details. For children who have nervously anticipated their first independent trip, this book not only acknowledges the anxiety, but also gently and realistically demonstrates that being on your own can turn out to be fun.

Arto's Big Move - Monica Arnaldo
      ISBN: 9781771470667
      Publication Date: 2014-10-15
When Arto's family moves from the cold North to the South for a year, the seven year old is very resistant to the idea. In fact, despite being surrounded by cacti, adobe houses, and sand, he refuses to give up his former garb—wool hat, winter coat, boots, and wooly socks. He spends his days sweating and brooding until a classmate approaches him. Ana's family has moved often, and her knowledge of living in the North connects her to Arto immediately. As the friendship blooms, Arto begins to shed his layers, a great metaphor for opening up to change and new friendship. As the year comes to a close, Arto has mixed feelings about leaving his new home. In the end, he learns that he can take a bit of his Southern life with him. This story will resonate with many children, especially those who have experienced a move. The boldly colored, expressive illustrations adequately reflect the cold Northern climate, with its snow and bulky clothing, and the heat and desert landscape of the South.

The Promise - Nicola Davies; Laura Carlin (Illustrator)
      ISBN: 9780763666330
      Publication Date: 2014-03-11
This contemporary retelling of Jean Giono's L'homme qui plantait des arbres begins on the mean streets of a city, depicted in muted browns and dismal grays. The character admits to stealing from people. When she targets what she perceives to be a frail old woman, her life changes. The old lady gives the thief her purse, which is filled with acorns, and the girl realizes that she has made a promise to plant them all. She keeps her word and plants them everywhere in the gritty, ugly city, "among rubble, ruins, and rusty railings." As trees slowly start to grow, the people begin to smile, and they plant flowers, fruits, and vegetables "in parks and gardens, on balconies and rooftops." The illustrations turn to glorious full color as the world becomes a better place. The endpapers reflect the change from a sad story at the beginning to the positive, life-changing event at the end. A thoughtful book, told with simplicity, with a poignant message.
